Universal Pictures’ all-star disaster epic Everest will open the Venice Film Festival.
Directed by Baltasar Kormakur (2 Guns, Contraband), the movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, John Hawkes, Robin Wright and Michael Kelly.
Everest is inspired by true events in 1996, when two different climbing expeditions were faced with an epic struggle for survival in their attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain.
It will open the 72nd edition of Venice. The film’s world premiere will take place on Sept. 2 in the Sala Grande at the city’s Palazzo del Cinema.

The film was shot on location in Nepal in the foothills of Everest, the Italian Alps, at Cinecitta Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the U.K.
Universal will distribute Everest worldwide. In the U.S., it will get an exclusive Imax 3D and premium large-format 3D screens release on Sept. 18. It will then be released wide on Sept. 25.
In Italy, it will be released on Sept. 24.
