The latest teaser for the Christian movie satire Faith Based features a toupee-wearing Jason Alexander poking fun at the faith-based film industry by playing a dodgy film producer.
“The only thing standing between you and your dreams is you and your dreams,” Alexander, who plays CEO Nicky Steele, says among many other new-age platitudes. Faith Based co-stars Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason as slacker filmmakers who decided to make a Christian movie for quick cash.
“I wanted to make the best Christian movie Jesus has ever seen. It’s time to show my dad what we can do,” Luke (Barnett) tells childhood best friend Tanner (Thomason). The parody movie is directed by Vincent Masciale and written by Barnett via their Lone Suspect production banner.
The Faith Based trailer, released ahead of an Oct. 9 release for the indie, has the filmmakers deciding to make Prayer in Space, about a stranded astronaut on a Mars mission, with washed-up action star Butch Savage, played by David Koechner, in the role of God.
“Doesn’t have to be ‘God’ God. You can talk about a higher power,” Margaret Cho, playing a movie industry executive, says with air quotes. The Faith Based parody, which debuted at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, has already drawn scorn from Breitbart and Fox News for taking a swipe at the lucrative Christian movie business.
Faith Based is produced by Masciale, Barnett, Thomason and Tim Kerigan. Giles Daoust,
Catherine Dumonceaux, Matthew Emerson, co-star Lance Reddick, Ryan Bury and James Andrew Felts are executive producing.
Gravitas Ventures is releasing Faith Based in select theaters and via VOD/digital on Oct. 9.
