BBC AmericaTORONTO – Cineflix Media has hired former Shaw Media exec Andrew Akman to manage fast-paced growth at the Canadian-based TV producer.
Akman becomes COO, enabling Katherine Buck, founder and co-CEO of Cineflix, to stand back from day-to-day control of the media group’s operations to focus on strategic direction.
“The company has grown so much, it needs someone in the corporate office to oversee the machine,” Akman told the Hollywood Reporter on news of his appointment.
Participant Media last year took an equity stake in the Canadian producer to develop and make TV series with the veteran U.S. producer of social documentaries.
Cineflix also named former NBCU International president Peter Smith as CEO of Cineflix Studios, the producer’s expanding scripted division.
Akman will take charge of operations at Cineflix as Toronto-based Simon Lloyd oversees factual production, London-based Smith expands the scripted division, and Chris Bonney grows the Cineflix Rights division, also in London.
Cineflix began as a documentary producer before moving heavily into reality TV with American Pickers and other popular series.
Cineflix’ scripted TV production now has a Los Angeles office and its first series, Copper, now shooting its second season for BBC America.
Akman has long been the go-to executive for Canadian companies looking to put a bridle on dizzying corporate change.
At Shaw Media, Akman worked as vp of planning, overseeing strategic planning and business integration activities.
Earlier at then Canwest Broadcasting, Akman was senior vp and chief administrative officer, responsible for integrating Alliance Atlantis broadcasting assets.
Before that, he was senior vp of corporate development and investor relations at Alliance Atlantis, which had a half-stake in the CSI franchise.
