Days after Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson landed the leads in Universal’s adaptation of EL James‘ Fifty Shades of Grey, a petition popped up seeking a recast of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele with Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel.
The Change.org petition has garnered more than 50,000 signatures as of Sept. 5, and the response prompted Fifty Shades producer Dana Brunetti to address the casting choices on Twitter on Sept. 3. He tweeted that “there is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.”
“Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE,” reads the beginning of the petition.

When asked to respond to fans’ desires to see him fill the role of the 27-year-old billionaire in the upcoming movie adaptation, Bomer was diplomatic in his response.
“I’m so grateful for the fans and touched,” the White Collar star told ET Online during an interview touting the October return of his USA Network show. “I’m looking forward to seeing the movie with Charlie and Dakota.”
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Garrett Hedlund and British actor Christian Cooke were among the names being bandied about for Christian Grey, with Felicity Jones, Shailene Woodley and Elizabeth Olsen among the actresses in the mix for Anastasia Steele.
Fifty Shades of Grey is slated for a Aug. 1, 2014, release.
