Berlin War Witch Rebelle Film Festival Still - P 2012
TORONTO – The Quebec films War Witch and Laurence Anyways and the cop drama Flashpoint will compete at the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards, organizers said Tuesday.
The combined film, TV and digital kudosfest, which replaces the former Gemini and Genie awards, sees Kim Nguyen’s War Witch grab a field-leading 12 nominations, including best film and best director for the Congo child soldier drama.
War Witch earlier snagged an Oscar nomination in the best foreign language film category.
On the film side, Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways earned 10 nominations, including a best actress nod for Suzanne Clement and best actor nomination for Melvil Poupaud.

Close behind was Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children with eight nominations, including one for Salman Rushdie for best adapted screenplay.
Also competing in the best film competition at the Canadian Screen Awards is Daniel Grou’s L’Affaire Dumont, Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette’s Inch’Allah and Michael McGowan’s Still Mine.
In all, nominees in 116 categories — 22 film, 89 television and five digital – were announced Tuesday.
On the TV side, the homegrown cop drama Flashpoint, which just wrapped on CTV, earned 11 nominations, followed by the HBO Canada comedy Less Than Kind with 10 nods.
Other multiple nominees in the TV categories include the CBC comedy Michael: Tuesdays & Thursdays, the Global Television drama Bomb Girls and perennial Gemini nominee CBC News: The National.
The Canadian Screen Awards, organized by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and hosted by Martin Short, will air on the CBC on March 3.
