Full of Christmas box office cheer, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol grossed $45.8 million overseas from 7,423 situations in 47 territories, down nearly 35% from its opening launch last weekend but more than enough to seize the No. 1 spot for the second straight stanza.
The high-octane action sequel starring Tom Cruise introduced itself to the foreign circuit on Dec. 14, and opened well over the Christmas holiday in Brazil and Mexico (bowing to $2.75 million and $2.5 million, respectively, ranking dominant No. 1 in each). First place finishes in second weekends in Japan and in South Korea were also recorded with market cumes reaching $24 million and $24.5 million, respectively.
Paramount said Tuesday that Ghost Protocol’s foreign gross total stands at $144.2 million. The film is expected to roll up $201 million in total box office by year’s end.
Ghost Protocol is one of several titles that have propelled Paramount to estimated 2011 offshore box office of $3.19 billion – a whopping 60% increase from 2010’s comparable figure, “setting both a record for our studio and indeed any studio,” said Anthony Marcoly, Paramount Pictures International – Theatrical president.
New to the foreign circuit on the weekend was Sony’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, director David Fincher’s edition of the Swedish thriller starring newcomer Rooney Mara, which opened in five Scandinavian markets for $1.6 million elicited from 480 screens. Sweden was tops with $950,000 grossed at 194 screens. A No. 3 Monday launch in the U.K. pushed the early foreign cume to $3 million.
Also opening overseas was 20th Century Fox’s We Bought A Zoo, director Cameron Crowe’s family drama costarring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church. Debut round at 692 situations in six markets drew $998,024 million. Also from Fox came newcomer The Darkest Hour, a Russia-set sci/fi-horror outing about alien invaders. Premier run drew $3.6 million from 1,238 situations in Russia, Ukraine, Hungary and Latvia.
Also well surpassing the $200-million mark is DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots, the 3D animation spinoff of Shrek with Antonio Banderas voicing the principal role of the dashing, sword-fighting feline. Distributor Paramount puts the film’s total foreign boxoffice at $222.5 million thanks to a $16.4 million Christmas weekend take from 5,800 venues in 42 markets..
Warner Bros. estimated that Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows generated $22 million at 4,200 screens in 25 offshore markets. International gross total comes to $49 million.
Director Guy Ritchie’s sequel costarring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law continues strongly in the U.K. where Friday’s gross came to $1.4 million) and Italy, vying for the No. 1 box office position in each. A No. 1 Germany opening generated $3 million from 636 locations.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwreckedgrossed $16.5 million from 5,607 venues in 53 markets. Foreign box office total for the third installment of Fox’s computer animation franchise about singing chipmunks stands at $38.5 million. Best of the openings in 13 markets was in France, where Alvin generated4.6 million at 591 locations.
Warner/New Line’s New Year’s Eve, the all-star romantic comedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker, drew $10.2 million on the weekend, lifting its international gross total to $45.4 million.
Vying for the top market spot in its seventh U.K.round ($4.1 million drawn from 835 locations) was Sony’s Arthur Christmas, which is capitalizing on the season with an overall estimate of $9.7 million collected from 5,925 situations in 74 markets. Overseas cume for the Aardman Animation 3D outing about squabbling Santas comes to an estimated $90 million.
Expected to hold the No. 1 France position is Gaumont’s release of Intouchables, the local-language comedy sensation, which looks to collect $4.8 million in its eighth round at 829 screens. Market cume stands at $118.6 million.
Warner’s Happy Feet Two, a family-oriented animation sequel about amiable penguins, generated $2.5 million at some 4,000 locations in 48 markets. Overseas cume stands at $61.5 million.
Fox’s In Time, the New regency sci/fi thriller costarring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried looks to surpass the $100-million gross mark ($100.4 million as per the distributor) after a $1.5 million weekend at 1,200 sites in 19 territories.
Other international cumes: Relativity Media/Universal’s Immortals, $27.8 million from Universal-handled territories only; Universal’s Tower Heist, $52.9 million; Universal/Focus Features’ One Day, $42.5 million; Universal’s Johnny English Reborn, $150.6 million; and Universal’s Rubbeldiekatz, $6.2 million from three markets including Germany and Austria.
Also, The Weinstein Co.’s The Artist, $15.4 million; Sony/Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, $243.9 million of which $173.8 comes from Sony-handled territories, $53.8 million from Paramount markets and $16.3 million via local distributors in Japan and Korea); Universal/Focus Features’ Jane Eyre, Universal’s Brain Drain 2, $6.6 million over 24 days in Spain only; The Weinstein Co.’s My Week With Marilyn, $4.5 million; and Universal’s A Dangerous Method, $6.7 million.
