Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful dominated an otherwise sluggish session on the foreign theatrical circuit, handily taking the top spot overseas with a $46.6 million gross in its second weekend in 55 markets, lifting its offshore cume to $136.8 million.
A No. 1 China premier for 20th Century Fox’s A Good Day To Die Hard, the fifth installment of the action franchise starring Bruce Willis, drew a mighty $15.7 million at 5,009 venues, elevating the total weekend take to $20.47 million at 8,966 sites in 50 markets. Its foreign gross total flew past the $200-million mark ($201.3 million), with an Australia opening due this week.
Opening in Australia and the U.K. day-and-date with its U.S. and Canada bow was Warner Bros.’ comedy The Incredible Burt, co-starring Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi and Jim Carrey. Its debut round down under at 208 sites drew $1.1 million, enough for a No. 2 ranking. In the U.K., the comedy premiered in muffled fashion in the No. 6 spot with $462,698 drawn from 386 sites.
Great and Powerful, the prequel to 1939’s The Wizard of Oz — which dropped a third from its opening weekend gross offshore — opened at No. 1 in France (with a mighty $4.7 million at 620 spots) and in Taiwan ($502,924 at 68 locations). It also took, in its second weekend, the top spot in Germany from Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, with a weekend tally of $2.65 million at 577 spots for a market cume of $7.2 million.
The special-effects-laden adventure-fantasy, directed by Sam Raimi and starring James Franco as the title character, claimed first place in Australia in its second weekend there with $3 million drawn from 558 sites for a market cume of $9.7 million. It took No. 1 in the U.K. in its second round in that market ($3.95 million at 539 sites for a market cume of $11.6 million) and was the top-grossing foreign title in South Korea, finishing No. 6.
Warner Bros.’ Jack The Giant Slayer, director Bryan Singer‘s 3D interpretation of the Jack and the Beanstalk fable — which up until now has been sequestered at 10 Asian markets — expanded its footprint for a weekend tally of $11.1 million at 3,750 sites in 25 markets. International cume stands at $35.5 million.
Jack logged a strong Mexico debut, tallying $4 million at 1,610 locations, sufficient for a No. 1 ranking in the territory. The film opens this week in Russia, Australia, the U.K. and Japan.
Meanwhile, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, distributed offshore in most markets by Paramount, is poised to slide past the $150-million foreign gross mark ($148.8 million) accumulated over nine weeks on the overseas circuit. Weekend total was $6.2 million drawn from 2,270 sites in 38 markets. Final major market opening is in Italy on May 1.
Opening in Australia on a limited, 40-venue break was Mama, Universal’s horror title starring Jessica Chastain, which grossed $122,000 and finished No. 13 in the market. The weekend overall generated $3.8 million at 1,987 playdates in 30 territories for a foreign cume of $47.2 million. Universal will open the picture in 21 markets over the next few months.
Premiering No. 2 in France (after Oz The Great and Powerful) was Pathe’s release of Jappeloup, a horseracing saga written by and starring local heart throb Guillaume Canet. Described as a French Seasbiscuit, the film opened at 533 situations and drew $4.8 million.
Oscar-related titles pushed on overseas. Universal’s Les Miserables drew $2.7 million at 4,741 sites in 39 markets, hoisting its foreign cume to $281 million and its worldwide total to $429.5 million. Sony’s Django Unchained has grossed a total of $246.2 million (of which $84.3 million comes from Germany and France) after a $3.1 million weekend playing at 2,031 sites in in 54 markets. It opens in Korea this week.
Fox’s Lincoln is on the cusp of the $80 million foreign gross mark ($79.95 million) after a $1.25 million weekend at 1,561 spots in 32 markets. Overseas cume for Life of Pi is approaching a half-billion dollars ($483 million).
Other international cumes: Sony and other distributors’ Resident Evil Retribution, $183.6 million after a $3.6 million opening day in China; Warner’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, $711.7 million; Paramount and other distributors’ Flight, $68 million over 20 rounds overseas; Universal’s This Is 40, $16.9 million; EuropaCorp’s 20 Ans D’Ecart, $5.2 million over two stanzas in France only; Universal’s Anna Karenina, $50.2 million; Studio Canal’s Boule et Bill, $12.5 million over three rounds in France only; Universal’s Identity Thief, $3.17 million; and Universal’s Ted, $328.6 million.
