Taking the top foreign box office spot for the second weekend in a row, Taken 2 took $45 million — $4 million more the Sunday’s estimate — from 6,889 venues in 63 markets, pushing its overseas gross total to $134.7 million.
The action sequel Starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen remained the U.K.’s No. 1 title ($6 million from 779 locations for a local cume of $23.3 million) in its second market round, and drew $4 million in its second China round at 1,500 situations for a market cume of $9.8 million.
Taken 2’ssecond Australia session grossed $3.6 million at 367 spots, lifting the market cume to $13.6 million. Its Italy opened scored $1.28 million at 267 situations.
Twentieth Century Fox is distributing the film in 35 markets (earning about $28.5 million) while the film’s coproducer, Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, is handling the rest including this weekend’s No. 1 second round in France ($5.3 million at 561 sites for a market cume of $15.6 million) and a No. 2 bow in Germany ($2.7 million at 437 venues).
Frankenweenie, director-coproducer-coscripter Tim Burton’s comedy animation with horror overtones, which has grossed $22 million over two frames in the U.S. and Canada, opened offshore in nine markets this round, collecting $4.9 million on the weekend. Early offshore cume for the Disney release stands at $5.3 million.
The weekend’s biggest single-market smash by far was Warner Bros. Espana’s release in Spain of Lo Impossible (The Impossible), director Juan Antonio Bayona’s action adventure costarring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor and a nasty Indian Ocean tsunami. Opening round drew $12.8 million from 638 screens, easily the market’s No. 1 title.
Opening No. 2 in France ($3 million at 348 spots) was Universal’s Ted, which grossed $14.4 million on the weekend at 2,736 playdates in 43 markets. Overseas cume stands at $251 million while the worldwide take, at $470 million, makes Seth MacFarlane’s comedy fantasy starring Mark Wahlberg the biggest grossing R-rated comedy of all time surpassing the $467.5 million foreign total racked up by Warner’s The Hangover.
Sony Animation’s Hotel Transylvania opened in second place in the U.K. ($2.8 million at 704 venues), and drew $13.7 million on the weekend overall at 3,669locations in 24 territories. The family animation outing in 3D has grossed $49.3 million so far overseas.
Hanging in as Austria and Germany’s No. 1 title was DreamWorks Animation/Paramount’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, which in its second Germany sessiongenerated $4.9 million at 742 sites. Weekend as a whole delivered $10.1 million from 2,530 situations in 32 countries, thus elevating the film’s foreign gross total to $465 million.
Endgame Entertainment’sLooper continued its foreign rollout, opening in a dozen territories on the weekend and playing in a total of 3,800 sites in 31 markets. The time-traveling thriller costarring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis is expected to gross more than $9 million offshore, excluding returns from the China markets.
Looper has collected $16.7 million since it opened in China on Sept. 28, but the latest market numbers won’t be known until later this week. Looper’s total foreign gross is put at about $58 million, pushing the film’s worldwide gross past the $100-million market tallied in 17 days.
With Resident Evil: Retribution’s foreign cume standing at $170.2 million, Paul S.W. Anderson’s fifth franchise installment starring Milla Jovovich has still to gross a total of $65.9 million to go to catch up to the action/sci-fi series’ overseas box office champ, 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which tallied $236.1 million. Retribution’s weekend take was $5.5 million from 3,788 sites in 79 markets.
Pushing past the $700-million foreign box office market was Fox’s animation smash Ice Age: Continental Drift, which grossed $3.3 million at 721 spots in four markets. That weekend action elevated the film’s foreign gross to $707.4 million.
Best grossing newcomer to the France market was Wild Bunch Distribution’s Dan Les Maison, director Francois Ozon’s thriller costarring Frabrice Luchini and Kristin Scott Thomas. Opening round drew $2.7 million from 278 sites, sufficient for a No. 4 market ranking.
Other international cumes: C.J. Entertainment’s Kwanghae (Masquerade), $61 million over five frames in South Korea only after a $4.4 million weekend at 675 sites; Universal’s Savages, $19.2 million; Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, $71.3 million; Focus Features’ To Rome With Love, $52 million (worldwide, $68.6 million); Universal’s The Bourne Legacy, $124.2 million; Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom, $19 million (worldwide, $64.4 million); Fox’s The Watch, $30.5 million; and Disney’s Finding Nemo 3D, $13 million over five rounds.
Also, Sony’s Total Recall, $120.7 million; Universal’s ParaNorman, $36.7 million; Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, $25.7 million; Universal’s Duhkless, $9.9 million in two rounds in Russia only; Universal’s Anna Karenina, $8.36 million in six stanzas in U.K. only; Pixar/Disney’s Brave, $294.2 million; Universal’s Mental, $2.85 million over 11 days in Australia only; Universal’s Pitch Perfect, $1.3 million; and Universal’s Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, $130.9 million.
