The foreign theatrical circuit received a long overdue box office jolt on the weekend as Taken 2 took off at 6,319 cinemas in 50 overseas markets, generating $55.2 million.
The sequel to 2008’s kidnapping thriller, Taken 2 pulled $39.2 million from 28 offshore territories handled by Twentieth Century Fox and an estimated $16 million from 22 markets handled by the film’s coproducer, Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp.
The action title reprises Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen in costarring roles. It began its international run last round in South Korea – and currently stands as Fox’s biggest release of the year in that market with a cume of $13.8 million — and has thus far compiled a total foreign gross of $66.8 million.
Taken 2opened No. 1 in at least a dozen foreign territories including the U.K. ($11.9 million at 807 sites), Australia ($8.1 million at 365 locales, Fox’s biggest market opening of 2012) and Mexico ($2.55 million at 761 situations). In France via EuropaCorp, it took the No. 1 spot by generating $8.8 million at 561 spots.
The film opens this week in another eight markets via Fox including Italy and Greece. EuropaCorp will open the picture in Germany.
Looper, last week’s No. 1 foreign title, opened over the weekend in six markets – Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania and Denmark. The No. 6 Germany bow generated $921,192 from 322 locations. In Austria, the film opened No. 5, grossing an estimated $108,110 from 29 sites while the film’s No. 8 Denmark bow elicited $128,834.
Full take from the full 19 territories won’t be immediately known since the firm China results won’t arrive until later in the week. Estimates from Filmnation Entertainment, the film’s overseas distributor, put the overall weekend take – minus China – at about $10 million. Official reporting of the missing figure from that market have been delayed by local observance of the seven-day Golden Week holiday period
The time-traveling thriller directed and written by Rian Johnson’s and costarring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis grossed $2.4 million in its second round in the U.K. at 466 sites, sufficient for a No. 2 market ranking. It finished No. 3 in its second Australia round, registering $2.1 million at 277 situations.
New to the foreign circuit this round was Universal’s release of Pitch Perfect, a comedy with music about the competitive antics of an all-girl college singing group. A No. 4 opening in New Zealand generated $457,459. The film debuts in the Philippines and Taiwan this week.
After 18 frames on the foreign circuit, DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted continues to chug along, generating $22.2 million on the weekend at 2,788 locations in 30 markets. A No. 1 opening in Germany accounted for the higher gross this round, contributing $14 million from 730 venues. A first place ranking in Austria added $1.2 million at 96 locations. Overseas gross total now stands at $450 million, with an Oct. 19 U.K. debut to finish the film’s foreign run begun on June 6.
Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania drew $12 million from at 2,877 venues in 22 markets, lifting its early foreign cume to $28 million. A No. 1 Brazil debut for the family animation outing in 3D delivered $2.7 million from 445 spots.
A No. 1 Spain opening for Resident Evil: Retribution ($1.4 million at 529 locales) helped boost the film’s weekend take to $9 million from 5,663 sites in 66 markets. That brings the total overseas gross for the fifth title in director-producer Paul S.W. Anderson’s action/sci-fi series starring Milla Jovovich to $155.5 million, putting the sequel $80.6 million shy of the foreign franchise record ($236.1 million) set by 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife.
The latest Resident Evil is being distributed in most foreign markets by Sony, which has tallied a cume of $142.8 million. The other principal distributor is the film’s German coproducer Constantin.
Ted, director Seth MacFarlane’s comedy-fantasy starring Mark Wahlberg, was buoyed by three openings, especially a solid, $3.3 million bow at 446 sites in Italy. Overall, the film registered $11.2 million on the weekend at 2,794 playdates in 46 territories. Ted has grossed a total of $232.2 million overseas thus far with five territories still to open including France and Belgium this week. (Worldwide,Ted has grossed $450.5 million.)
Fox’s Ice Age: Continental Drift surpassed the $700 million gross mark overseas ($702.5 million) thanks to a $5.5 million weekend at 823 venues in four markets.
Premiering a mighty No. 1 in Russia – taking 53% of the weekend market – was Universal’s release ofDuhkless, director Gleb Orlov’s adaptation of the 2006 bestseller of the same title by Sergei Minaev. The Russian language outing opened to $5.2 million at 668 locations. The film opened the 34th Moscow International Film Festival in June.
The No. 2 title in France was Warner Bros. France’s release of Les Seigneurs (The Dream Team), director Olivier Dahan’s soccer comedy about veteran players reuniting to assist Brittany fishermen. Second round at 614 screens drew $4.2 million. France cume stands at $14.2 million.
Universal’s The Bourne Legacy pushed its foreign cume to $120 million after a $3.6 million weekend at 2,226 playdates in 47 markets.
Other international cumes: Universal’s Savages, $15.7 million; Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, $69.8 million; Disney’s Brave, $291 million; Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, $24.1 million; Universal’s Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, $127.6 million; Fox’s Prometheus, $276.7 million; Disney’s Finding Nemo 3D, $11.6 million; and Fox’s The Watch, $29.5 million.
Also, Universal/Focus Films’ ParaNorman, $34.8 million; Fox’s Stefan Vs. Kramer, $11.5 million in Chile only; Focus Features’ To Rome With Love, $50.2 million; Universal’s Mental, $1.6 million in Australia debut at 236 spots; Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom, $18.7 million; and Universal’s Anna Karenina, $8 million over 24 days in U.K. only.
Opening Overseas This Week:Disney’s Frankenweenie from director, co-scripter, producer Tim Burton; and Paramount’s Wuthering Heights (in Australia), a British coproduction directed by Andrea Arnold .
