Showtime has landed Moonbase 8. The six-episode comedy, which started production earlier in 2020, will debut on the cable network this fall.
Another collaboration between Portlandia co-creators Fred Armisen, Moonbase 8 stars Armisen, Tim Heidecker and John C. Reilly as three subpar astronauts living at Moon base simulator — in hopes of one day being chosen for an actual space mission.
“In a year when we have all been forced to come to terms with life in close quarters, we are happy to have landed this offbeat take on life in captivity with dreams of escaping to something grander,” said Showtime Networks president of entertainment Jana Winograde. “While the show was produced before the pandemic, its subject matter is timely — and thanks to Fred, Tim, John and Jonathan, its humor is timeless.”
A workplace comedy, astronauts Skip (Armisen), Rook (Heidecker) and their leader Cap (Reilly) attempt to qualify for their first lunar mission as a series of unexpected circumstances forces them to question their own mental sanity, trust in each other and whether or not they’re cut out for space travel.
It’s little surprise that Showtime snapped up the project. The pandemic-related production stoppage has made completed and unattached scripted series especially desirable as benches of original programming start to thin out.
Created, written and executive produced by Armisen, Heidecker, Reilly and Krisel (who also serves as director), Moonbase 8 is produced by A24 and Abso Lutely Productions.
