SYDNEY — FremantleMedia Australia and Survivor creator Mark Burnett’s One Three Television have inked a new deal for FMA to exclusively produce Burnett’s shows in Australia and New Zealand, the pair said Monday.
Under the deal, FMA will become Burnett’s sole production services company for all One Three-owned and controlled formats in both countries, and will be the producer of any local versions of Burnett’s programs.
FMA CEO Ian Hogg said the deal was “a fantastic development for FremantleMedia Australia. Both FMA and Burnett have a shared DNA for creative excellence and execution. Mark Burnett’s track record speaks for itself. His intuitive ability to tell stories and deliver hit shows time and time again is just extraordinary.”
As part of the deal, FMA will have direct and exclusive access to Burnett’s entire back catalog of formats as well as the ability to take shows currently in development and produce them first in Australia and New Zealand, along with ancillary rights to all formats. It include’s new formats like ABC’s upcoming Expedition Impossible.
No details of specific programs for Australia have yet been announced although Hogg told local media that a second series of The Apprentice Australia and a local version of Joan Rivers’ TV Land show How Did You Get So Rich are likely to be the first shows made.
While Burnett shows like Survivor and The Apprentice have been mainstays of the Nine Network’s line up over the years here, local versions of those shows have not been as successful.
Nine made Australian Survivor in 2002 which was not renewed, while The Apprentice Australia in 2009, hosted by local businessman Mark Bouris launched with 686,000 capital city viewers – anything under 1 million viewers then was considered marginal on a broadcast network here — and finished after ten episodes with 834,000.
Possibly the most successful local production of a Burnett show here was Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, which was produced by Roving Enterprises for Network Ten and ran for three seasons from 2008, with Rove McManus as host.
C. Scot Cru, MBI’s head of international distribution and production, who brokered the deal with FMA, said: “We want to do more original production in Australia and New Zealand and we think partnering with FremantleMedia Australia is a big step in making that happen. I’ve known Ian for years and trust him and his team to help lead the way.”
Burnett added: “We have a great track record with FremantleMedia Australia and value the high quality television they produce. I am looking forward to working with Ian and his team and am sure we will have many more successful formats produced in Australia and New Zealand.”
“We look forward to working with Mark and Scot to make great television down under,” Hogg added.
