“This better be good… It feels like a Saudi wedding,” Princess Deena Abdulazizon, the glamorous Riyadh store owner, posted to her Instagram on Saturday. Getting to the Brooklyn Yards venue for Alexander Wang’s fall ’14 show — the sumptuous Duggal Greenhouse by the East River — was actually surprisingly easy. Unlike the messy return to Manhattan, which was 45 minutes of un-choreographed black car ballet to get the sprawling audience — including Anna Wintour, Avatar actor Sam Worthington, Zoe Kravitz, stylist Vanessa Traina and artist husband Max Snow and Brit singer Aluna Francis — the hell out of there.
For most of the audience, the pain was worth it, as the collection of hunting inspired jackets and shift dresses with glossy high boots was strict sleek chic, with futuristic a perspective as demonstrated by the round of thermal color-changing, laser embroidered exhibited at the end.
But as perhaps a testament to the distance (Brooklyn!), the cold (26 degrees!) or the House of Wang’s desire to tighten up their inner circle, the front row was deprived of many of the designer’s usual supporters. No Terry Richardson or his usual gang in sight, for instance. But one fan we spotted was enthusiastic rapper Angel Haze, dressed head to toe in the designer’s Fall 2014 commercial collection.
“Look at my shoes, those are from his new collection and they bound to be great”, she said proudly, pointing at her glossy, grey, black and white patent leather moccasins. “It’s actually my first time at the shows season,” offered the confirmed fashion muse (she performed at a Versus Versace event last spring, as a Donatella fave). “I know Alex well. For me, it wasn’t too difficult to get here, I live in Brooklyn — in Williamsburg. And he’s obviously one of my favorite designer. Along with Helmut Lang.”
Asked about her fashion rules: “I don’t use a stylist, I don’t wear skirts, not happening”. As we complimented her good spirits, the rapper added another reason for her jovial spirit: “I just released my first album, “Dirty Gold”, with an amazing bunch of great musicians who play with Coldplay, Kanye West, it’s a pretty solid body of work, so it’s an exciting time for me.”
Another Alex fan, Nashville-based musician and redheaded supermodel Karen Elson, interrupted her chat with French model Caroline de Maigret to praise the designer. “Alex is a friend first and foremost, and I’m so blown away by his creative process and the clothes he creates. Every season, he just becomes more and more a visionary, and he represents the future. He has something about youth that nobody else conveys so well. The reason why all these people are here, they’re full of patience.”
