Jaime King Rose McGowan Ruffian Show - P 2014
Owen Kolasinski/BFAnyc.com“We took a road trip, ended up in L.A. and kind of fell in love,” said designer Brian Wolk, one half of New York-based label Ruffian, recalling his visit to Tinseltown with designer partner Claude Morais a few months ago. “Then we decided we wanted to do a show here.”
And indeed they did; the design duo presented Ruffian’s spring 2015 line at the Gavlak Gallery on Monday night. Front-row guests included Teri Hatcher, Leah Pipes, George Kotsiopoulos, Cameron Silver, Rose McGowan and Jaime King admiring the black-and-white collection inspired by historic Hollywood marquees and L.A.-born artist Maynard Monrow‘s witty text-based artwork.
Before taking their seats (and taking selfies), McGowan and King went backstage to greet the designers, and not long after, King had to put her sewing skills to the test. The Hart of Dixie actress — dressed in an elegant red Ruffian jacket and shirt, James Jeans and Jimmy Choo heels — helped fix one of the runway bowlers, explaining to Pret-a-Reporter that “one of the hats was broken and they didn’t know how they were going to get it on [the model] so I basically used elastic and thread to sew essentially what they would do with horse hair and cross-pinned it into her hair.” Given that King grew up sewing her own clothes, this backstage emergency was an easy fix (at least, she made it look that way).

After the show, King noted that the final outfit (a white evening gown with a black georgette skirt) was one of her favorite ensembles. Her seatmate, McGowan, shared that whenever she watches a Ruffian presentation, she especially enjoys that there’s always some type of narrative. “What they specialize in each season, each collection, is telling a story,” said the Once Upon a Time actress, who met the pair about four years ago at a dinner party. She’s since become their “Los Angeles fairy godmother,” according to Wolk.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s Top 25 Power Stylists, helped style the catwalk looks, which featured only L.A.-based resources, including fabrics from The Fabric Store L.A., hats from Montez, frames by Garrett Leight California Optical and artist Monrow’s work digitally printed on various dresses. Stewart’s daughter, Ivy Bragin, modeled one of the ensembles, while Palaye Royale, a band described as a “fashion-art rock band” on Twitter, played during the presentation. Guests were also treated to Ciroc cocktails afterward.
Though Wolk and Morais are based in New York, McGowan stated: “I’m campaigning to get the boys to move here permanently.” We hope they come back soon — and stay — too.
