Harry Dean Stanton was the star of the Saint Laurent show — even with Pierce Brosnan, Gary Oldman, Salma Hayek, Liam Gallagher, Lenny Kravitz and Sky Ferreira in the front row.
The Pretty in Pink star and Dan Tana’s regular wasn’t in attendance, but the The Swimmers’ song Like Harry Dean Stanton blared on repeat like a mantra throughout the show that closed Men’s Fashion Week in Paris Sunday night.

Dubbed the Surf Sound collection, designer Hedi Slimane showed his true colors — those of a Santa Monica sunset. The bleachers were plastered with palm tree-and-Pacific posters, while the first looks down the runway included striped ponchos and lots of fringe that brought to mind the 1970’s Laurel Canyon hippy aesthetic that has become a Hedi hallmark.
The looks evolved with the decades; sequined and leopard Members Only style jackets with striped tees came and went before moving on to flannel shirts, torn jeans, trucker hats and beanies that recalled his “California Grunge” collection of two years ago.
Sequined, embroidered and printed varsity jackets called the ‘Teddy’ were named the Sunset and the Tequila, with the Baby hand embroidered by Lucia Ribisi, daughter of Giovanni, from her artwork Pet Name. And were pink blazers a nod to Stanton’s seminal role? We think so.
The runway was heavy with Hollywood royalty, with some famous sons making their runway debuts. Dylan Brosnan, son of Pierce, and Charlie Oldman, son of Gary walked the walk. Jack Kilmer, son of Val, made a repeat appearance for the brand.
“We live in Malibu and Hedi Slimane discovered him at the coffee store, took his photograph. That’s how it happened and now here we are,” said proud papa Brosnan. “It’s kinda crazy beautiful isn’t it?”
Brosnan flew with his wife, Keely Shaye Smith from Ireland, where he is currently shooting the thriller I.T. The couple arrived unusually early for a fashion show. “He told us ‘Don’t be late, it will start on time and it will be the best one yet,’ ” said Smith. They arrived a half hour early; the show started an on time-by-fashion-standards 32 minutes late.
Hayek, whose animated film The Prophet had its French premiere last week, heaped praise on seatmate Kravitz. “He gave a lot of really good advice,” she said of the production that has been her passion project for years. “I didn’t help with anything,” he demurred. “I was just there for meetings in the garden.”
Hayek was keeping cool with a laid back summer look and hat despite temps topping 90 degrees in a city unused to heat. “It’s nothing, I’m Mexican,” she joked.
The show, which began with Slimane’s traditional light installation in a rainbow of colors, ended in an explosion of silver confetti over the audience in the shape of the iconic YSL logo of course.
