The theatrical trailer for Fruitvale Station has debuted.
The drama, previously titled Fruitvale, is based on a New Years Day 2009 incident at Oakland’s Fruitvale BART station, where an altercation occurs, police arrive and a 22-year-old named Oscar Grant ended up being shot.
FILM REVIEW: Fruitvale Station
The trailer, set to The Roots “Now or Never,” flashes back to preparations for festivities on New Years Eve. Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) plays Grant and Octavia Spencer (The Help) plays his mother, Wanda, in the Ryan Coogler-directed film.
Fruitvale Station was acquired at this year’s Sundance Festival by the Weinstein Co. for $2.5 million, sources told THR.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief film critic, Todd McCarthy, reviewed the film at Sundance, noting that the title combines a documentary style subject material with figures who have an established Hollywood presence to create “a powerful dramatic feature film.”
