Digital media company Fullscreen announced Wednesday that it has acquired app developer Supernova for an undisclosed price.
Through the deal Fullscreen will add Supernova’s talent and acquire its suite of consumer products, including video sharing app Viddy, private photo messenger Clique and slow-motion video editor Epic.
“More than 40 percent of Fullscreen’s total viewership comes from mobile devices, which is up from less than 10 percent just two years ago,” said Fullscreen CEO George Strompolos in a statement. “With the acquisition of Supernova, we are well-positioned to capitalize on this major shift in consumer behavior through rich mobile video content experiences. Perhaps most importantly, the Supernova team shares our vision to empower the connected generation of creators.”
Formerly known as Viddy, the company has had a well-documented rise and fall. The Viddy app launched in 2011 and garnered high-profile users such as Justin Bieber. But Instagram and Vine soon became the market leaders. The company eventually returned money to investors, conducted a round of layoffs and rebranded as Supernova in 2013.
“Our mission continues to be helping people create and share amazing content using elegant technology,” Supernova CEO JJ Aguhob said in a statement. “Together with Fullscreen, we will create mobile video products that millions of users enjoy. We are thrilled to turn our attention toward serving and exciting the thousands of creators in Fullscreen’s global network.”
Fullscreen, which works with YouTube content creators and brands, has a multichannel network with more than 3 billion monthly video views and more than 300 million total subscribers.
