Jake Szymanski, an Adam McKay protege who hails from Funny or Die, is in negotiations to direct Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, a comedy project that Chernin Entertainment is producing for Fox.
The project is based on the true story of Mike and Dave Stangle, brothers from Albany, New York, who attempted to find a wedding date for a cousin’s nuptials by placing an ad on Craigslist.
The endeavor went viral, and the brothers soon found themselves on morning news shows. A book deal with Simon & Schuster imprint Gallery followed (slated for publication in 2015) as did Hollywood interest.
The movie version (naturally) amps up the mayhem by having the hard-partying and immature brothers putting out an ad for dates and coming across a pair of honeys that can out-party and out-immature our slovenly heroes.
The script was written by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, the duo who wrote the recent Seth Rogen–Zac Efron hit comedy Neighbors.
Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and David Ready are producing via Chernin Entertainment. Jonathan Levine, who was at one point attached to direct, is also involved as a producer.
Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien are exec producing. Daria Cercek is overseeing at Fox.
Szymanski is one of the go-to guys for comedy shorts on Funny or Die, the site created by McKay and Will Ferrell, and has also directed shorts for Saturday Night Live. He is attached to direct The Social Life, a comedy set up at Universal with Amanda Seyfried and Rebel Wilson attached to star.
He is repped by CAA and Mosaic.
