Funny or Die is finding the funny in Hollywood’s female-directors gap.
A new short pushes women helmers like Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Nisha Ganatra (Transparent), Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said), Shira Piven (Welcome to Me) and Anne Fletcher (Hot Pursuit) to pitch their best takes on an upcoming installment of a faux franchise called Space Cops.
Only 7 percent of the 250 highest-grossing movies of 2014 had female directors, according to a study by San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film.
And in the sketch, letting a woman direct a potential summer blockbuster is an idea that’s too far out.
“Can you handle that?” Max Greenfield and his studio-executive colleagues repeatedly ask the female candidates, regarding their ability to load the film with explosions and gunfights.
Despite their presentations of renderings and explanations of previous projects with more than enough stunts and action sequences, the frustrated directors eventually head for the door.
However, one executive justifies their exits, saying, “If you have to go to your kids, that’s fine.”
