Comedy studio Funny or Die and journalist Joel Stein on Monday launched Best Presidency Ever, a six-episode digital series tackling the abnormality of the Trump administration.
Episodes follow a comedy clip show retro format and feature Stein, Cheryl Hines and Hal Sparks, who were all original cast members of VH1’s similarly formatted nostalgia series I Love the ’80s.
“When Trump was elected, one of the things — I think I wrote about it at the time [he did, for Time Magazine] — was being afraid of our natural inclination to normalize everything, and there’s just been this barrage of abnormal things that have happened,” Stein tells The Hollywood Reporter, “to such an extent that we forget about them. It’s just hard to remember everything.”
He goes on to say that that’s exactly the point of the show, to remind audiences of what has happened during the last four years. As Stein clarifies, the content will be presented in a way that is “not too hard to swallow.” He adds that the show also aims to reach people who haven’t necessarily been following every piece of Trump-related news over the last four years, and give them the “big picture.”
The show was shot with cast and crew members physically together in a studio with all participants being tested for COVID-19 beforehand, explains Stein — who says he has been in such isolation that he has barely been to a supermarket amid quarantine — adding his surprise that during a pandemic, the team was able to make something so polished in a short timeframe.
“It’s hard to believe, but 2020 is the fourth Presidential election cycle Funny Or Die has made content around and we think Joel found the perfect way to combine great talent, great jokes, and important dialogue into the national conversation,” said Mike Farah, CEO of Funny Or Die.
Additional cast members providing running commentary throughout the series include Rachael Harris (Lucifer), comedy duo Frangela (Angela Shelton and Frances Callier), Keke Palmer (Hustlers), Al Madrigal (The Daily Show), Lamorne Morris (Woke, New Girl), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), writer and comedian Jena Friedman, Sherry Cola (Good Trouble), comedian Marcella Arguello and Robert Smigel’s puppet character, Triumph the Insult Comic dog.
The show is produced in partnership with philanthropists Marci Rosenberg and Henry R. Munoz, III, with Isaac Feder as showrunner and executive producer. His credits include Sex Ed starring Haley Joel Osment and the Comedy Central talk show Not Safe With Nikki Glaser.
Episodes of Best Presidency Ever will be available on Funny or Die every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, starting Oct. 19 and running for two weeks.
