The Fyre Festival is coming to Netflix.
The streamer has picked up the feature documentary Fyre about the now-infamous, would-be music festival that was billed as a luxury experience but slowly unraveled into well documented disaster. The doc will debut on the streaming service on Jan. 18, 2019.
Created by Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule, Fyre was promoted as a festival on a private island in the Bahamas featuring bikini-clad supermodels, A-List musical performances and posh amenities. Guests arrived to discover the reality was far from the promises and documented their attempts to get off the island on Twitter and Instagram, while the world (or at least some of it) watched in real time.
Lawsuits totaling more than $100 million in damages were filed against McFarland and Ja Rule, and McFarland was indicted for wire fraud and sentenced to six years in prison.
Chris Smith directed the inside look at the disastrous festival. The streamer previously released the director’s Emmy-nominated documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, about Jim Carrey’s transformation into comedian Andy Kaufman for Man on the Moon.
Danny Gabai, Chris Smith and Mick Purzycki produced, with Brett Kincaid, Max Pollack, Matthew Rowean, Gabrielle Bluestone, James Ohliger and Elliot Tebele acting as exec producers. 30WEST negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
The Fyre Fest is also the subject of a Hulu docu-series that is slated for a 2019 release, from directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, the filmmakers behind Paramount Network’s Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story.
