Lionsgate will release Angel Has Fallen, the third in the series of amped-up action movies in which Gerard Butler plays Secret Service agent Mike Banning, on Aug. 23, 2019.
The only competition currently occupying that date is Alex Kendrick’s Overcomer, an inspirational drama about a high school coach who takes on a cross-country runner, from Sony’s Affirm label.
In the upcoming Fallen film, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Banning is framed for the assassination of the president. Butler is joined by a cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Nick Nolte, Danny Huston, Piper Perabo and Tim Blake Nelson.
The first pic in the franchise, Olympus Has Fallen, was released domestically by FilmDistrict in 2013 and grossed $170.3 million worldwide. Its sequel, London Has Fallen, released by Focus in 2016, took in $205.9 million globally.
