In a groundbreaking move, the French-German public broadcaster ARTE will stream a feature film for free on its website for viewers across Europe.
In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, ARTE will provide viewers in the European Union with free online access to When We Leave, the award-winning drama from Austrian director Feo Aladag starring Game of Thrones actress Sibel Kekilli.
Kekilli won best actress at the German Film Awards for her performance in When We Leave as an ethnic Turkish woman in Germany struggling to escape a violent marriage. Her co-star, Settar Tanriogen, took the best actor award.
Aladag’s directorial debut won numerous festival awards, including best feature and best actress honors at Tribeca, the Label Europa Cinemas prize at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival and a sweep of the 2010 German Film Critics Association Awards.
ARTE will put When You Leave up on its website www.arte.tv for three months starting on March 8. Viewers in the EU can select subtitles from any of the EU’s 24 official languages to watch the movie. The streaming will be geo-blocked for all countries outside the EU.
Aladag’s latest film, Between Worlds, a drama set in war-torn Afghanistan, debuted in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival last month.
