WETACOLOGNE, Germany – The man who helped design notorious German online file sharing site Kino.to has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in the first major prosecution in the Kino.to case.
The court in Leipzig found the 33-year-old Marcus V. guilty of copyright infringement in 1.1 million cases and that he earned around $215,000 (€160,000) through advertising on the Kino.to site.
Marcus V. accepted the ruling. He gave authorities a full confession and provided prosecutors with evidence against other Kino.to operators. There are cases pending against two other alleged members of the Kino.to site, including the man alleged to have run the operation.
German authorities hope to bring charges against more than a dozen people arrested in a raid on the company’s data centers this summer.
