COLOGNE, Germany – German couch potatoes spent a record 225 minutes (3 hours and 45 minutes) a day in front of their TV screens last year, a new record.
The official figures show overall TV consumption was up an average of two minutes a day over all age groups. Viewers 65 and over, Germany’s most prolific TV viewers, spent an average of 5 hours and 6 minutes a day watching the box, unchanged from 2010. Also unchanged were the viewing habits of the 14-49 demographic, the group considered the most desirable by German advertisers, which watched an average 3 hours and 12 minutes a day. The biggest jump came in the 50-64 demo, which watched an average of 4 hours and 40 minutes of TV a day, 6 minutes more than a year ago.
Germans also spent more time in front of their computers and game consoles, if a report from the association of consumer electronics is to be believed. The group said revenue nationwide jumped 5 percent to $35 billion (€27 billion) in 2011, driven by demand for smartphones, tablet computers and 3D and Internet-capable television sets. The trend is expected to continue in 2012, helped by the London Olympics and the European Soccer Championships, with total revenue forecast to increase a further 4 percent to $36 billion (€28 billion).
