Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions continue to defy their second-class status in Germany by defeating all comers.
The animated comedy, co-directed by Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin, held on to a fifth straight number one slot in the territory, and have earned $49 million in Germany so far. Minions last week overtook Jurassic World to become the number one film of the year to date in Germany and looks set to easily pass 5 million ticket sales before the end of its run. With a global take of $854.6 million,
Minions is already the 9th most successful animated film of all time and it still has plenty of room to grow, with release in China set for Sept.13.
Chris Columbus‘ Pixels opened to a decent $2.6 million in Germany, good enough for second place in a session dominated by the Minions. Behind them were Warner’s Magic Mike XXL and the John Green adaptation Paper Towns. Breaking into the top ten was home-grown animated feature Ooops! The Ark is gone…, a re-telling of the biblical story of Noah and the Ark, which earned around $285,000 in its first outing.
