Paris’ Haute Couture Fashion Week is kicking up its high heels and the city will be given its bi-annual injection of gorgeousness on and off the runway. With Paris offering so many options, from the luxurious to off-the-beaten path, it’s easy to keep your skin glowing as you rush from show to show. Here’s THR‘s guide to looking stunning along the Seine.
Face: The Mandarin Oriental, the latest addition to the Parisian palace hotel scene, offers urban zen, just around the corner from the Place de la Concorde. Take a pause to pamper yourself and your skin with the two hour and 20 minute Guerlain Orchidée Imperiale prestige facial massage in your own private suite complete with deep skin cleansing, firming facial massage, eye contour definition, age-defying Orchidee Imperiale creams and three different face masks. And don’t miss the new 80-minute “bloom into summer” massage starring sensuous Chinese herbs and flowers and a dip in their vitality pool. The Mandarin is also the place for a beauty boost inside and out with a brand new cocktail launching just in time for Fashion Week called “The Little Green Dress,” a mix of fresh cucumber, melon, mint, lemon juice, wasabi, lettuce and agave. Guerlain Orchidée Imperiale prestige treatment: 420 euros. 251 rue Saint-Honoré
Hair: Put your locks in the care of Leonor Greyl’s hair spa. The top French hair care line offers specialized beauty treatments at their central spot just behind the Madeleine Church. Try their signature hour and a half spa treatment that includes a scalp and back massage, their palm oil and wheatgerm oil-based masks and creams and steam therapy, then get a quick cut and color before you head out on the soiree circuit. Leonor Greyl is famous for its natural products that use ingredients like wheatgerm, seaweed, palm oil and, new this summer, magnolia oil. Fans of the brand include French stars like Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Alain Delon and American A-listers Cameron Diaz, Mila Kunis, Nicole Kidman, Sofia Coppola, Jennifer Aniston, Kirsten Dunst, Drew Barrymore, Julianne Moore and Madonna. Hair treatment: Ranges from 95 – 115 euros depending on length of hair. 15 rue Tronchet
Body: Why do actresses like Marion Cotillard and Berenice Bejo adore Dior? Find out at the Dior Institut at unofficial Fashion Week headquarters the Plaza Athenee. Head to the downstairs spa with a minimalist silver and white décor for their brand new “Corps Celeste” treatment. The head-to-toe treatment is perfect after an intense day of running in heels and makes use of the brand’s “Dior Svelte” hydrating and firming cream to tone the skin. Plus, you’ll be just below the Plaza’s bar so you can pop up for a bellini as you watch the fashion crowd stroll by. “Corps Celeste” massage: 180 euros / 50 minutes. 25 Avenue Montaigne
Spirit: Looking for some Om away from home? Try classes with English-speaking yoga teachers in Paris. Enjoy the view of the Eiffel Tower from a boat along the Seine with Cassandra Kish’s Vidyaa yoga class (25 euros, enter on the quai across from 26, avenue de New York) on Saturdays or head across the river for “guerilla yoga” classes (suggested donation 20 euros, 65 Quai d’Orsay) with Marc Holzman and Anne Vandewalle at the American Church. In between shows and shopping in the very chic “NoMa” (North Marais) neighborhood, pop in for the hour-long classes at l’Atelier Marais (10 euros for first-timers, 75 euros for five classes, 54 rue Charlot) that just opened last year and has gathered quite a local following. Try classes with English-speaking teachers including Fanny, Marie, Ingy, Cathy or Karl, who offer different styles of yoga including Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, Kriya, pre and post natal and hormone yoga, plus Pilates, Meditation and Tai Chi classes. If you couldn’t fit your yoga gear into your suitcase, head to Yoga Concept (123 rue de Turenne), a concept store dedicated to everything zen. Take a travel-sized Manduka yoga mat back to your hotel or put on yoga’s own version of couture, fashionable street wear brands like Om Girl, Beyond Yoga and Spiritual Gangster.
Beauty foods: Paris may be famous for its croissants and macarons, but the city is also rich in beauty foods. At SOL Semilla bar cantine boutique (23 rue des Vinaigriers), a quaint spot along the Canal Saint Martin, enjoy a beauty boost from the inside with dishes prepared using superfoods including aloe vera for glowing skin, urucum for protection from the sun, acerola rich in Vitamin C or cacao for an energy lift. Try the “purple power” juice or magical maca “milkshake” end with a decadently healthy dessert made with antioxidant-rich acai berries. Actress and Karl Lagerfeld muse Vahina Giocante is a fan. On Sunday, wake up early and head to the outdoor organic market on the Boulevard Raspail (9 am to 2 pm, Boulevard Raspail between the rue de Rennes and the rue du Cherche-Midi) where you’ll likely run into Gerard Depardieu, Juilette Binoche, Julie Delpy or Diane Kruger while you sample the fresh produce from farms all over France. Make sure to take a fresh wheatgrass shot at Hermione’s stand, stop at Le Coin Bio for the highest quality “Demeter” label products in France complete with a friendly staff and indulge your sweet tooth with fresh blueberries from St. Exupéry at the “Délices du Petit Prince” ephemeral summer stand. Plate of the day/SOL Semilla: 12 euros
Baby-soft skin: Les Douces Angevines: Diane Kruger and Jennifer Garner love this organic line of all-natural serums that mix different plants to help the skin glow. The products are, for now, only available in France so stock up while you’re in town. Try their “Lia” to target undereye circles after a late night out or the brand’s Aube d’Ete for a healthy summer glow.
Flawless nails: “French manicures” aren’t in fact French at all and, until recently, just getting any manicure was very difficult in Paris. Instead of nail spas on every street corner, there are bakeries. Luckily, OPI has opened Culture of Color nail bars all over the city that not only offer quality hand and foot treatments with OPI’s signature range of color, but are also affordable, centrally located and quick enough to fit in between shows.
Fresh air: While you may be spending most of your time sitting in cars between shows or sitting on benches at the shows, make sure to enjoy a few minutes of the beauty around you. Walk through the Tuileries gardens, the Place des Voges or the Luxembourg gardens or grab a “Vélib” bicycle and skip the car service to your next rendez-vous.
