David Fincher may have two Oscar nominations under his belt, but his The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, star Rooney Mara says he’s still not got his due.

“He was incredible,” Mara, who portrays protagonist Lisbeth Salander in the film, said of working with the director for the second time (she had a small role in his Oscar-nominated The Social Network). “I think he’s wildly misunderstood, kind of like the character.”

Her character was something Mara had to work a lot at embodying. “I had to do a lot of dialogue training, I had to do some computer training,” she revealed. But that wasn’t all. “I had to learn to ride the motorcycle. I did kickboxing. I did a lot of skateboarding to sort of try and change the way that I walk and stand.”

And, according to Daniel Craig, it worked. “She looked exactly as she should do, which is a girl that has been abused all her life and is trying to hide away and scare people off,” he said. “The idea is that if you see her coming down the street, you’re going to avoid her. And that’s what she wants.”
