Kerry Washington will be honored at the GLAAD Media Awards.
The Scandal star will be presented with the Vanguard Award at the Los Angeles ceremony at the Beverly Hilton on March 21.
The Vanguard Award is given to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality. In addition to her role on Shonda Rhimes’ LGBT-inclusive drama and other onscreen roles, Washington has participated in GLAAD’s annual anti-bullying campaign and Spirit Day, has spoken out against the repression of LGBT people in Russia and Africa, and has advocated for marriage equality for same-sex couples.
“Throughout her illustrious career, Kerry Washington has consistently brought life to characters that encourage acceptance of LGBT people,” said GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. “Her outspoken support for equality, both here at home and abroad, has sent messages of hope and empowerment to fans all over the world, fostering dialogue that builds understanding and helps move hearts and minds.”
Previous recipients of the honor include Jennifer Lopez, Kristin Chenoweth, Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Taylor, Antonio Banderas, Drew Barrymore, Janet Jackson and Sharon Stone.
Kerry joins Roland Emmerich as an honoree at the L.A. ceremony, with additional special guests and honorees to be announced. The New York awards ceremony will take place at the Waldorf Astoria on May 9.
