After a 30-year absence, Glenda Jackson is returning to Broadway.
The two-time Oscar-winning actress will star in the Broadway premiere Three Tall Women, opposite Laurie Metcalf. Joe Montello will direct the staging of Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, produced by Scott Rudin. It will begin previews Feb. 27, 2018, ahead of an opening night March 29 at a Shubert theater yet to be announced.
Three Tall Women is a beautifully wrought portrait of a woman in life’s final act, and is Albee’s most personal work. In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1994, it received the New York Drama Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle awards for best play.
Jackson’s long-awaited return to Broadway follows her sold-out run in King Lear in 2016 at London’s Old Vic, which brought her back to the stage after a 25-year absence in politics.
An Oscar winner for Women in Love and A Touch of Class, she also won two Emmy Awards for her performance as Queen Elizabeth I in the BBC serial Elizabeth R. She has received a Tony nomination for each of her Broadway performances: her debut in The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade in 1965, Rose in 1981, Strange Interlude in 1985 and Macbeth in 1988.
Metcalf currently is starring on Broadway in A Doll’s House, Part 2 as Nora Helmer, a role that earned her a Tony nomination. She was previously Tony nominated for November, The Other Place and Misery, and won three Emmy Awards for her work in Roseanne.
