Interstellar may have stalled a little during its domestic opening last weekend, but the ambitious sci-fi drama found favor in a big way in China, grossing a spectacular $5.4 million (RMB 33.3 million) on opening day Wednesday.
Christopher Nolan‘s ninth feature film was his biggest opening to date in China, surpassing Inception‘s near $2 million opening (RMB 12 million) and The Dark Knight Rises‘ $4.61 million (RMB 28.3 million).
Interstellar also bested Gravity‘s excellent China opening haul by 16 percent, with Alfonso Cuaron‘s space drama taking $4.69 million (RMB 28.8 million). Interstellar played at an incredible 7,742 Chinese screens on Wednesday, its first day of theatrical release in the world’s second biggest movie market.
Interstellar also played strongly elsewhere and now has a foreign cume of $121.1 million with strong performances in other big movie markets such as South Korea (cume to date $20.1 million), the U.K. (cume to date $12.4 million), Russia (cume to date $11.6 million), France (cume to date $9.1 million) and Germany (cume to date $6 million).
Domestically, Interstellar’s box office hit $65 million through to Wednesday.
