Attendees at the 2018 Makers conference in Hollywood’s NeueHouse (Feb. 5 to 7) hung on to every word from speakers like Natalie Portman, Sheryl Sandberg, Ava DuVernay and Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff Tina Tchen, who revealed that Time’s Up has raised more than $20 million to end workplace harassment.
Gloria Steinem, 83, discussed her new role at Vice Media, which includes being part of the female-led advisory board created by CEO Shane Smith amid claims of harassment in the company. “The people who had been a problem were already gone,” Steinem tells THR about why she handed out pins at a 2017 wrap party that said, “We put the ‘V’ in Vice.”
Steinem says that after speaking to large audience which included Smith, “that due to violence against women, there are fewer females on earth than males for the first time … Shane got tears in his eyes and said, ‘We have to do something.’ [Vice] is a great group of people.”
