GLOW, the 1980s female wrestling comedy from Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, has got a global launch date.
Netflix announced Wednesday that the series, inspired by the real story of 1980s wrestling league “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” (aka GLOW), will drop worldwide on Friday, June 23.
The 10-episode comedy is set in Los Angeles and will showcase big hair and body slams as it tells the fictionalized story of Ruth (Alison Brie), an out-of-work actress who finds one last chance to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers.
The comedy is based on the professional women’s wrestling syndicated TV series that existed in the ‘80s. Netflix picked up the comedy to series in May. Betty Gilpin co-stars as Debbie Eagan, a former soap star who left show business to have a baby, only to be sucked back in.
GLOW was co-created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Orange Is the New Black), who serve as showrunners on the series. Kohan and Orange Is the New Black producer Tara Herrmann will serve as executive producers.
