AP ImagesBeauty’s sassiest moment of the night may have come from Elisabeth Moss giving E!’s mani cam the finger (twice), but the strong smoky eye seen on nominees and presenters Julia Roberts, Mila Kunis and Kerry Washington hit high on beauty’s edginess scale. In an award’s season where female roles are being touted for their strength, makeup artists didn’t skip a beat by creating equally confident beauty moments for their clients.
GOLDEN GLOBES BEAUTY: Nude Lips Rule the Red Carpet
Makeup artist Tracey Levy, who created presenter Kunis’ look, sought a Bianca Jagger at Studio 54 vibe. “I wanted her to look sexy but seem effortless,” said Levy. “You get drama with the eye and gorgeous nude lip that didn’t take away from the super glamorous Gucci dress.” For eyes, she used Armani concealer, Lancome shadow in Timeless Taupe for the smoky effect and Lancome’s kohl pencil, liquid liner and Hypnose Drama mascara to intensify the eye. The lip was Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick in #104 Skin.
For makeup artist Genevieve Herr, it was all about wanting to add edge to client Roberts’ Dolce & Gabbana get-up. She gave the August: Osage County nominee a heavy eye with a combination of Lancome shadows (It List and The New Black), black gel eyeliner and Hypnose Doll Lashes mascara.
Like Herr and Roberts, Carola Gonzalez and client Washington decided together that a “bold, dramatic, daring” eye would juxtapose beautifully with the simplicity of Washington’s Balenciaga dress. Gonzalez used a combination of Neutrogena eye shadows on the eyelids before rimming the eyes in Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Liner in Cosmic Black and applying four coats of the brand’s Healthy Volume mascara.
The awards season stage has been set: Ladies (and makeup artists), it’s time to bring out the serious makeup and leave the light-handed naturals and nudes tucked away for another year.
