No one was safe from becoming a punchline when host Ricky Gervais returned to host the Golden Globes — not even NBC.
“We’re live on NBC — and it’s right that NBC host this awards show because they’re the only network that’s fair and impartial. And that’s because they’re the only network with zero nominations,” he joked while hosting the 73rd Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, which aired on the broadcast network.
Despite being the channel to host the awards, NBC earned zero nominations in a year when streaming services dominated cable and broadcast. Netflix dethroned HBO for the most nominations and more than half of the total 56 TV noms came from cable networks and streaming services.
“Nothing in it for them tonight,” Gervais continued, further driving home his point about NBC. “They don’t care, obviously.”
After raising eyebrows during his 2010-2012 run, Gervais took three years off before agreeing to return to host the annual awards show on his terms. “I always write my own jokes, I can say what I want — and it’s live,” he told The Hollywood Reporter about why he came back.
Further proving that no topics were off limits during his opening monologue, the British comedian also mocked Sean Penn for his recently published interview with wanted Mexican drug lord “El Chapo” and Caitlyn Jenner, saying she “didn’t do a lot for women drivers” in reference to her fatal February crash.
The 73rd Golden Globe Awards were broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Sunday (Jan. 10).
