Kerry Brown/Paramount PicturesMartin Scorsese’s Silence may be a late release among awards hopefuls, but the high-profile drama was left completely out of Monday morning’s Golden Globe nominations, failing to earn nominations for best motion picture (drama) or best director (Scorsese). Star Andrew Garfield landed a nomination, but it was for his work in another film, Hacksaw Ridge. Also failing to earn a single nomination were fellow late-season releases Patriots Day, which hits theaters Dec. 21; Love & Friendship, which was expected to land nominations in a number of categories; Hail Caesar!, which also was expected to land a couple of nominations; and Sully, which was shut out, with even star Tom Hanks failing to land an almost certain best actor in a drama nomination. Sully director Clint Eastwood also failed to land a nomination.
Arrival landed two nominations, for star Amy Adams and for best score, but was left out of the other categories, including best picture (drama).
Warren Beatty’s Rules Don’t Apply was predicted to land a couple of nominations, but the Howard Hughes film, which has bombed at the box office, wound up with one nomination for actress Lily Collins. Beatty, who wrote, directed and starred in the movie, didn’t land an individual nomination.
and Fences scored two nominations each, but were left out of a couple of top categories. The latter didn’t land a best picture (drama) nomination, and star Denzel Washington scored a best actor in a drama nomination but no best director nomination. Similarly, Hidden Figures didn’t land a best picture (drama) nomination, nor did Kevin Costner score a best supporting actor nomination. Hidden Figures star Taraji P. Henson also was left out of the best actress (drama) category.
While Manchester by the Sea scored five nominations, just behind La La Land and Moonlight for the most film nominations, Lucas Hedges was left out of the best supporting actor drama category despite earning raves for his performance. Nocturnal Animals was another multiple nominee that found itself left out in a few categories in which pundits expected it to get recognized. While Ford was nominated for both best screenplay and best director, the movie was left out of the best picture (drama) category. And Aaron Taylor-Johnson was a surprise nominee in the supporting actor category, with pundits expecting fellow Nocturnal Animals actor Michael Shannon to earn that nomination. Also neither lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal nor Amy Adams were nominated for their performances in the film, but Adams was nominated for Arrival.

And while the best animated film nominees matched predictions, adult-aimed hopeful Sausage Party missed out on a nomination, as did Disney-Pixar’s summer hit Finding Dory.
In terms of larger trends, it’s worth noting that none of the six major studios saw their films earn a nomination in the best motion picture (drama) category and that there are no women nominated for best director or best screenplay.
