Elisabeth Moss took home the Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in TV series, drama on Sunday night for The Handmaid’s Tale.
The actress beat out Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), Claire Foy (The Crown), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Deuce) and Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why).
During her acceptance speech, Moss took a moment to thank her cast and crew, but was quick to speak on behalf of The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood, who was unable to attend the ceremony. “We were the people who were not in the papers,” the actress read of Atwood’s words. “We lived in the blank, white spaces on the edge of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories.”
“Margaret Atwood, this is for you and all of the women who came before you and after you … who were brave enough to speak out against intolerance and injustice and to fight for equality and freedom in this world,” Moss said afterward, expressing gratitude for the “brave” women whom have spoken out against their perpetrators. “We no longer live in the blank white spaces on the edge of print. We no longer live in the gaps between the stories. We are the story in print, and we are writing the stories ourselves.”
In the press room backstage, Moss reiterated her stance on female empowerment, expressing the necessity for having “as many women behind the camera as possible.” “We want to see those stories, we want to see ourselves,” the Globe winner said. “Having as many women behind the camera as possible is very important for us. It’s also what people want to see. They make money, too.”
