Octavia Spencer came down the red carpet of the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala earlier than most of the other stars, eager to talk to the press and brimming with the energy of the adrenaline rush of one’s first big awards’ show.
“I’m wearing a David Meister gown, ” she exclaimed of her sparkly long black caftan-style gown with sleeves. “My bag is Judith Leiber and my jewelry is Neil Lane.”

Not bad fashion credits for an actress unheard of until she played Minnie in The Help. Adding her own personal touch, she put on shoes out of her own closet: “My most comfortable shoes, I wasn’t taking any chances.”
But the star who’s speech stole the night (“I just wanted to tell Brad and George I’m single . . . thought they should know.”) is not as prepared for next Sunday’s Golden Globe’s arrival line as you’d think she’d be.
“I’m just a short chubby girl,” she announced on the red carpet. “It’s hard for me to find a dress to wear to something like this! It’s a lot of pressure, I’ll tell ya. No designers are coming to me! Maybe I should have sworn off peanut butter last year instead of this year. One of the best things about awards shows are you get to wear clothes you would never get to wear.”
However, Spencer proved to be one of the most popular celebs of the night, and spent much of the after party at the Parker Hotel taking congratulations and kisses. She also had one very important thing to say to the press: “I just want everyone to know I’m breaking up with Brad,” she giggled. “I’ve now met Angie and she’s so nice i just can’t continue to take him away from her.”
