From man buns to French braids and lots of scruff, 2014 was a particularly hairy year for many actors. As for the 2015 Golden Globes, not much will change, according to celebrity groomers who say the full-blown beard is still going strong.
“I think men are learning how to grow out their facial hair to sculpt their face and features, whether that means a one-day shadow or a month or two beard growth,” adds hair stylist Sunnie Brook, who has worked with Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth and is grooming Owen Wilson for Sunday’s awards show.
Expect to see those beards paired with slightly more cleaned-up hair (and yes, that could mean a formal man bun) on the carpet. Brook forecasts “lived-in hair with a bit of polish to it,” while Fee describes it as “classical structure with casual texture.” She adds that side parts will be a big look (think David Beckham and Benedict Cumberbatch), along with a glossy or retro matte texture.
In addition, Brook is watching for what she calls “The Brit” to take off — “a throwback to the bowl cut of The Beatles that was revisited in the ’80s with a punk twist. The current version has a lived-in finish on the edges and a slight taper down the back,” as seen on musicians and models at Tom Ford and Diesel spring 2015 shows. Fee calls that upcoming messy mop fringe look “vintage rocker, not schoolboy Bieber.”
And while she calls out the man bun and beard-sporting Jared Leto as an obvious trendsetter for dudes (and women too), Fee is keeping her eye on Fifty Shades of Grey‘s Jamie Dornan. “He is a bit more classical but looks great with a beard or clean-shaven, and he can get away with any length of hair.” No argument here.
