Ricky Gervais was able to sneak a few more fresh jokes into his Golden Globes monologue thanks to Sean Penn’s recently published Rolling Stone interview with Joaquin Guzman Loera, the notorious Mexican drug lord known as “El Chapo.”
Penn’s story went live Saturday night.
The controversial interview between the actor and drug lord was secretly done while Guzman was on the run from Mexican authorities after breaking out of jail for the second time. The awards-show host found it perfect for fodder.
Gervais said he was going to say anything he wanted.
“I’m going to go into hiding. Not even Sean Penn will find me. Snitch!” he joked.
Penn and actress Kate del Castillo, who set up the meeting and accompanied Penn, are reportedly under investigation by Mexico government officials.
