The film is based on a true story, and it features Witherspoon as a straight-talking woman tasked with finding jobs for four “Lost Boys” of Sudan — the name given to the real-life group of over 20,000 refugees who fled Sudanese civil war in the past three decades. She finds a cause when she takes one refugee (Arnold Oceng) in and learns that his sister is still in Sudan, her immigration prevented by 9/11.

The trailer shows the “Lost Boys” contending with cultural disorientation, as well — prying Witherspoon’s character as to why she is unmarried, checking with her friend (Corey Stoll, House of Cards) if there are any lions in the area.
Directed by Philippe Falardeau from a script by Margaret Nagle, the project is the latest drama from Witherspoon, who most recently starred in 2013’s West Memphis Three film Devils Knot. She will next appear in Wild, from Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel Inherent Vice.
The Good Lie will be released in theaters Oct. 3.
