If we had to choose a pair of shades we’d want to wear all the time, it’s safe to say we’d probably pick Karen Walker’s strikingly bold frames in every single shape offered by the designer. And we bet Lena Dunham, Rihanna, and Gwen Stefani would agree, as they’ve all been spotted in a pair of Walker’s sunnies in the past. After establishing Karen Walker Eyewear a decade ago (and keeping Hollywood shady), the designer is toasting her brand’s 10th anniversary with a new campaign appropriately titled “Celebrate.”
Alongside the confetti and cake-filled ads, photographed by Derek Kettela in NYC, the celebratory campaigns feature limited-edition all-gold frames in each of the styles she’s released every year for the past decade.
“Over the last 10 years, we’ve been inspired by characters such as JT LeRoy, military dictators and their obsession with oversized eyewear, art works by Marcel Duchamp, Advanced Style and Ari Seth Cohen, albinos and aliens,” Walker tells Pret-a-Reporter of her inspiration behind some of the designs, adding, “Movies that have inspired us are Opening Night and The Stepford Wives.”
From the Annie, which was the label’s first ever frame, to the Number One angled style (pictured above), each frame is encased in clear epoxy resin, giving the illusion of a reflective solid gold finish, and the lenses are given an amber base with reflective coating for a gold mirror finish. The 10th anniversary collection will be available at Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue and Shopbop for $350 per frame.
As for how she plans to commemorate the special occasion, Walker says, “We’re having a party tonight in Sydney that’ll feature cakes, balloons, confetti and champagne.” Cheers and congrats!
