The benefit of a reverse mullet look? According to hairstylist Rudi Lewis, who styled the “business in the back, party in the front” hair for Ryan Roche’s fall 2016 presentation, it’s great for turtleneck season.
“It’s a very controlled shape,” he said of the sleek double ponytails. “It’s not voluminous, it doesn’t stick out. It’s very tight at the neck,” he noted, adding that the style was created with Roche’s turtlenecks and scarves in mind. “It’s a very snug, clean shape, because a lot of the time the girls are going to have these very tight sweaters that are going to come up high.”
To start, Lewis focused on creating the “business”-chic double ponytail. He first blow dried the hair and sprayed PHYTO Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray ($30), before taming waves with a flat iron. To keep the hair in place, Lewis then added PHYTO Workable Holding Spray ($24) before gathering the hair into a high ponytail and smoothing the ends with PHYTO Phytolisse Ultra Glossing Finishing Serum ($30).
For the second half of the double ponytail, Lewis looped a large bobby pin between the first ponytail and the base of the neck. Next, he wove a string elastic through the bobby pin and used the ends of the tie to secure the tail into a second hold, trimming the excess string.
Those “light and airy” wisps of hair at the front — “the party” look — were then created by pulling forward “the baby hairs and any cool kind of wisps at the hairline.” To add a bit of windswept drama, a curling iron was used to fashion the effortless and slightly romantic look.
To polish off the style, Lewis spritzed a kabuki brush with a touch of PHYTO Phytolaque Soie ($20) and smoothed the baby hairs across the forehead while brushing the ponytail to sleek perfection.
