This story first appeared in the April 24 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
In 2011, New NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke famously implemented Project Symphony, an effort to synergize better the various corners of the empire to help promote one another. Nowhere has the strategy been more evident than on the morning news show Today, which regularly plugs NBC and its sister properties. But is Today more shameless than its rivals? As an experiment, THR‘s TV team watched all three 7-9 a.m. broadcasts from March 9 to 13 and clocked the time devoted to programs and personalities of that network or its sister properties. (For fun, they also tracked stories about dogs and cats and missing women.) At least that week, ABC took the synergy crown with more than 36 minutes promoting itself. Burke must have been jealous.
