After three years, Howard Owens is out as president of National Geographic Channels U.S., according to an announcement on Monday by CEO David Lyle.
Owens is credited with introducing original scripted programming to the channels, including Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy and the upcoming Killing Jesus.

“Howard injected remarkable energy into the National Geographic Channels brand,” said Lyle. “He has been an invaluable member of our leadership team, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future business endeavors.”
“As I get ready for my next adventure, I can’t help but reflect on what has been an incredible experience for me, both personally and professionally,” added Owens. “National Geographic Channels have some of the brightest minds in the television business, and I’m proud of the work we have accomplished together — specifically in defining the National Geographic Channels as a destination for innovative, original and brand-defining creativity.”
During his tenure, National Geographic launched the series Wicked Tuna, Brain Games, Ultimate Survival Alaska, Life Below Zero, The Legend of Mick Dodge and Inside Combat Rescue, notes the announcement.

Owens also oversaw event programming such as SEAL Team Six and The ’80s: The Decade That Made Us for NGC.
At National Geographic Wild, where Owens also served as president, he is credited with the series The Incredible Dr. Pol and the recent launch of Cesar 911.
Prior to joining Nat Geo in late 2011, Owens was a co-founder and executive at Reveille, a production studio that is now part of News Corp. Before that, he served as an agent at the William Morris Agency.
