Television series shooting in New York were slowly beginning to get back to work on Wednesday. But most shows were not actually filming, but simply opening their production offices, assessing damage and working to reschedule filming scuttled by Hurricane Sandy.
Steiner Studios – home of midseason series The Carrie Diaries and The Following – escaped the storm “unscathed,” according to studio chief Doug Steiner, adding that the facility in the Brooklyn Navy Yard will reopen on Thursday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office of media and entertainment issued 17 permits on Wednesday, all for interior studio production. Permits for exterior shoots are suspended through Friday at least.
A Warner Bros. TV spokesperson confirmed that Person of Interest, The Carrie Diaries, 666 Park Avenue, The Following and pilots The Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives and Golden Boy were in the process of re-opening their production offices.
Multiple series based at Broadway Stages in Greenpoint, Brooklyn were back in production Wednesday, including Blue Bloods and The Good Wife. The facility did experience some flooding but no significant damage, say sources.
Showtime’s Nurse Jackie and Jenji Kohan‘s Netflix series Orange is the New Black are scheduled to resume production Thursday at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Long Island City, Queens, while Sesame Street will begin shooting again on Monday.
So far the production delays are not having a major impact on network schedules. An ABC spokesperson said the network does not anticipate any airdate delays for 666 Park or midseaosn series Zero Hour. Production on Gossip Girl, which is in ts final season on the CW, has been completed. Likewise, the current season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, which is based at Steiner Studios, and the upcoming second season of Girls, also have wrapped.
NBC expects to make delivery dates for all of its New York-set series including 30 Rock, Smash and Law & Order: SVU, according to a network spokesperson.
CBS has four series and the Kal Penn pilot My Building (formerly Ex Men) based in New York. The network’s Friday drama Blue Bloods was unable to complete post-production on the episode scheduled for Nov. 2, despite working down to the wire Monday, Oct. 29, when bridges and roads were beginning to close in anticipation of the storm. CBS will swap that episode with an original episode already in the can, a network spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.
