Ian McKellen Helps South African Director With YouTube Marriage Proposal

Wrapping up with a strong Christmas play period, 2013 was a record-setting year at the domestic box office. For the first time ever, domestic box-office revenue hit $10.9 billion, up roughly 1 percent from the record $10.8 billion earned in 2012, due in part to a robust holiday season that was up 10 percent over the previous year. End-of-year big hitters at the North American box office included Warner Bros.' The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Disney's runaway family hit Frozen and Will Ferrell comedy Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

So how do you propose to a die-hard Star Trek-loving partner?

For South African director Brett Best, the only answer was drafting Patrick Stewart, otherwise known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Sadly, Stewart was unavailable Pink News reported on Friday.

Best though was not to be deterred and asked Stewart’s best friend, Ian McKellen, if he minded taking his place for his X-Men: Days of Future Past co-star. McKellen, who officiated Stewart’s wedding back in September, filled in admirably, helping Best propose to his boyfriend, Khalid Shawwa. 

Unsurprisingly, given the star talent, Best told Pink News his video proposal got the desired response.

Best directed the documentary Miracle Rising: South Africa in 2013 and before that worked on the South African version of the weight-loss TV show The Biggest Loser.
