LONDON – The Inbetweeners 2 scored the biggest opening day for a comedy in the U.K. after racking up more than $4.6 million on Wednesday.
The box-office result saw it beat the previous comedy record set by the first Inbetweeners movie in 2011, which had grossed $4.2 million on its opening night.
Co-financed by Film4 and produced by Bwark Productions, a Zodiak Media company, The Inbetweeners 2 follows on from the first film, catching up with Will, Simon, Jay and Neil, four teenage losers now at college, and their mostly failed attempts to attract members of the opposite sex. The movie has the added spice of a trip to Australia.

The comedy began life as a multi-award-winning TV series on U.K. channel E4, spawning three seasons and a 2012 U.S. version by MTV. The American remake was dropped after just one season, later being branded among the top 10 British comedies whose U.S. remakes have flopped by London newspaper Metro.
The Inbetweeners 2 could well break further U.K. records in the next few days if it continues on the same path. The first film went on to have the most successful opening weekend for a comedy, beating Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and The Hangover Part II, after earning $22.2 million. A limited release in the U.S. for the first film saw it gross $36,000.
