Leading Indonesian art house director Edwin has partnered with Dutch production company Lemming Film to co-produce his next project, Exotic Pictures, a period feature that will explore “the long and suppressed history between the Dutch and the Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal,” the two parties said.
Edwin (he goes by the one name) is best known for his 2012 feature, Postcards from the Zoo, which was the first Indonesian film ever to be selected for competition at the Berlin Film Festival.

Exotic Pictures, said to be set in the 1940s and 50s, will be co-written by Edwin and Dutch writer-director Marco van Geffen. Edwin’s own banner, Babibutafilm, will also co-produce. The film will be shot on location in Bali and the Netherlands, where Edwin has been conducting masters studies at the Dutch Film Academy on the history of pornography.
The film is seeking co-production partners and financing at the Netherlands Production Platform this month. In October, it will be among the 25 projects seeking backing at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Project Market. Germany’s Pallas Films are already in place as production partners.
Malaysia’s Lorna Tee, who co-produced Postcards, is again on board as a producer.
“Edwin is one of the most unique new filmmaking talents from Southeast Asia with his own distinctive style and voice,” she said in a statement. “I am happy to work with him and Lemming in exploring the history, relationship and impact of the Dutch and Indonesian history.”
Exotic Pictures will be Amsterdam-based Lemming Film’s second Asian production. Last year they backed Dutch director David Verbeek’s Chinese co-production Dead & Beautiful, a vampire film set in Beijing. The company was also behind Amat Escalante’s Heli, which competed for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
