Following the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 30, nominees like Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Brie Larson, Viola Davis and the casts of such films as Spotlight and Straight Outta Compton will make their way from their seats inside downtown L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium to the official post-show bash just steps away.
The SAG Awards post-party is once again co-hosted by People and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, marking a major milestone for the party partners as the 2016 gala is the 20th year that People, EIF and SAG-AFTRA have come together to honor the philanthropic efforts of actors. Cementing the gala’s team effort is Event Eleven’s Tony Schubert, back again to design and produce the gala for the eighth straight year. (THR has an exclusive first-look at the party atmosphere, seen above and below.)
As part of the partnership, People and EIF make an annual donation to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. It’s a substantial one too: People and EIF gift $1 million that helps to support three of the foundation’s programs through 2019. Those include Storyline Online, a video-based children’s literacy website; the Catastrophic Health Fund; and the Scholarship Program. Since the SAG-AFTRA Foundation doesn’t take union dues or fees from SAG-AFTRA, its programs and offerings are only possible through gifts and grants from supporters including People and EIF.
Jess Cagle, editorial director for People and Entertainment Weekly, says the mag is proud to partner with EIF to support the SAG-AFTRA Foundation and its industry initiatives. He adds: “People has celebrated the philanthropic efforts of Hollywood for over four decades. We are delighted that our readers enjoy our special ‘Why I Care’ weekly section, which showcases personal stories from celebrities giving back, as much as we do.”
Says EIF president and CEO Lisa Paulsen: “We are thrilled to see the impact that the EIF and People magazine grant has made on the work of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, helping its programs grow and support even more aspiring entertainers.”
