Awards season is finally over, and now it’s time to celebrate the most in-demand stylists who put their A-list clients in some of the most jaw-dropping looks on the red carpet. Among one of the most talented celebrity dressers who helped make their stars stand out often this season? Petra Flannery, who lands at No. 1 on this year list of The Hollywood Reporter’s fifth annual 25 Most Powerful Stylists issue.
“[I’m] shocked and super excited and humble, all at once,” Flannery, who is featured on one of two issue covers with Emma Stone, told Pret-a-Reporter during Wednesday’s intimate celebratory luncheon, hosted by THR and Jimmy Choo at West Hollywood’s Soho House. Flannery — clad in a Chloe patterned top and green trousers (“I’m a pants girl,” she noted), white Christian Louboutin heels and a Jimmy Choo clutch — was also joined at the afternoon gathering by clients Amy Adams, Zoe Saldana and Gwen Stefani, who donned a fun polka-dot Dolce & Gabbana frock.
Adams, who wore a Roland Mouret dress, told Pret-a-Reporter that she enjoys working with Flannery for her “laid-back approach, which really helps me, because the red carpet and styling aspect can be really stressful at times.”
The actress shared that she’s definitely willing to take more fashion risks nowadays, thanks to her styling guru. “I tend to trust her and she’s gotten me into things that I would have never considered,” said the redheaded beauty, noting that she first refused the white Lanvin gown she wore at this year’s BAFTAs but later ended up falling in love with the look.
Flannery wasn’t the only one getting love from her clients at the celebration, as stylist Tara Swennen (No. 24) arrived with PYT clients Emily Ratajkowski and Odeya Rush; stylist (and newly pregnant!) Ilaria Urbinati (No. 5) with actress Elizabeth Chambers; and stylist Micaela Erlanger (No. 13) with Ride Along star Olivia Munn.
Erlanger, who made her debut on last year’s list, said the recognition has been tremendous. “I am honored and grateful, and frankly, I can’t believe it. It is a very wonderful feeling. It is great to just to be in the company of so many talented stylists,” said the Connecticut native, who works with Munn, Lupita Nyong’o, Jared Leto and Common.
After sipping a glass of wine (or two), stylists Jason Rembert (No. 22), Joseph Cassell (No. 10), Sophie Lopez (No. 18) and Brandon Maxwell (No. 12) nibbled on chicken paillard, wild mushroom risotto and Soho House’s epic chocolate cookies while sitting on the sun-soaked terrace of the club’s garden room.
Making his debut on this year’s list, Maxwell (Lady Gaga‘s go-to for fasion, who was featured on the issue’s cover with the pop star) said he was shocked: “I really couldn’t believe it, like, ‘Is that real?’ … It still feels very surreal. I feel like I’m living in a weird Lifetime movie.”
